What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? IL
How do I find out or get a copy of a warrant in order to see what it is for? Is a request via clerk of courts or a request via freedom of information act the way to go?

Is this a warrant for you?

Show up to the police station and ask if you have an outstanding warrant. If you don't, there's nothing to worry about. If you do, you'll get to take care of it immediately.

If you contact the police in person and inquire as to whether or not there are outstanding warrants for you, they will (most likely) let you know.

Alternatively, you could hire a lawyer to do so on your behalf.

That was not sarcasm. That's the exact same advice I'd give my kids if they asked the same question. It builds character when you face a problem head on instead of trying to find out the answer on the sly. It also teaches you to avoid trouble in the future (hopefully).
