How was Clippit(Office Assistant) legally protected by Microsoft(by patent, trademark or as know-how)? Office Assistant (Clippit)was a Microsoft feature to assist users by way of an interactive animated character. Microsoft has developed a family of characters such as The Dot (smiley-faced red ball), F1, Links(cat), Rocky(dog) and others. Do you know how these chatacters could be legally protected or how has Microsoft protected them? Can the technology of animated charactors be patented?

People, how know something in this field of knowledge, let's have a discussion and share or knowledge, thoughts, ideas.

I think that the characted inself(like a picture) can be protecred as a trade mark, the technology of charactor animation can be protected by copyright, and the idea of using it in the software can be patented...
Mainly I'm interested in patenting... can the actions of animated charactor and the charactor itself be patented like an industrial desing or invention???
