We have chosen to hyphenate our daughters name. However we would only like to use one last name when enrolling her in school and other programs. The hyphen was kept to give her the option as an adult to connect back with her biological family We recently moved to Las Vegas NV. When enrolling her in Clark County Schools we were told we have to use the hyphen. Is this true?

The name can't be changed on a whim. If the adoption papers gave her a hyphenated name that IS her name. To change it at this point requires another court order. The school system is not obliged to allow you to register the child under a fictitious name.

I'm not trying to change her name. We were told in the state of Virginia that we could use one or the other if we chose.

Her legal name is the hyphenated name. You need to use her legal name to enroll her in school. It's really not an unclear concept.

What does Virginia have to do with Nevada? And we've never heard of any such thing in Virginia either. In fact, we have a number of provisions in the Virginia law here that pretty much require the proper name to be used (at least for registration purposes). If a school will allow a student to use a fictitious name in the class room, that would appear to be a local district policy issue.
