Is it illegal to download a song/movie if you already own the cassette, album or VHS? I would like to transfer my cassettes to cd. The easiest way is to just download the music. Is this ok? (why?/why not?)

It is not legal to do this. It's legal to transfer your songs from your cassette, album or VHS to CD or DVD, it's just not legal to download the songs from the P2P networks to do so.

As to the why it's illegal, well, because that's what the courts have said. Specifically, see AMG v. Napster, you could also Google the MP3.com case, both of those cases have held that transferring a digital music file over the internet is illegal, even if you have a "right" to own the digital copy.
