I need advise about my disabled son and his school

What is the name of your state?Indiana, My son is 16 years old and has cerbral pulsy. He started high school 2 years ago and it has been an nightmare. My sons disability is very severe and he has communication barriors. I recieved a phone call from a teacher at the high school, she informed me that my sons teacher was putting him in the corner when she verbally prompted him to hold his head up and he didn't. He has limited trunk and neck control so this is very difficult for him to do. I went to the school and talked to his teacher about this and she said she was getting tired of repeating herself to him. I was very very angry. I let the school here passify me for the last 2 years and now that we are into the 3rd year things are starting up again. I need to know what steps I can take to stop this abuse.

Is he attending classes for children with severely hampered abilities? Have you looked into having the state provide him a teacher in his home?

Please do not mistake my next comment as being uncaring but I do see the frustration all must feel in this situation including the teacher. Many times such cases as your son's are such a disruption to the class that the other students suffer in the process and the teacher ends up being overwhelmed with the entire situation. Tried having her/him over for coffee and sitting down and talking this over?

**A: immediately file a written complain with the school and copy the state DOE Superintendent and the Attorney General's office. Then search and read all you can about the ADA and specifically the IDEA. You and your son do not have to take that crap. Upon reading the laws, you will see that the school is mandated by both state and federal law to identify him as disabled, make him eligible for services and provide special needs services AND educate him as well.
Take a couple of days and spend some time reading the No Child Left Behind Act. Then if you have extra time read the Hawaii Felix Consent Decree. There is most likely an advocacy group in your state.
Decide today that 2 years is a long time. It is time to stand up for your son and hold the school accountable. The school will not tell you the "secret" laws. You must find them yourself and use them to protect your son.

My son is in a multi-handicapped class and has never been mainstreamed. I have tried talking to them in a very calm manner but it seems as though they take kindness for weakness

Thanks for your advise. I'm going to take a week off of work and start working on this.

Then there is no reason for this nonsense in that given environment. The educator is so grossly incapable of her job and needs to be replaced.

Fight with all your might! And good luck.

For the record many children with special needs are so often thrown into the mainstream because there not facilities/faculty for these kids. That is the frustration I was discussing and not that your child did not deserve his/her education. In these instances, most in smaller areas, home teaching is available thus my suggestion.
