What is the name of your state? CA

I rented an illegal garage conversion for 18 months!!! then the landlord tells me to leave because the city is pressuring him. I did my research and found out the city(Building and Safety) already has this place documented as a garage being used as a dwelling which is illegal.

He gave me a 30 day notice and then the unlawful detainer. I answered it and we go to court on March 11. I feel like I am entitled to the relocation fee since I paid rent and it is an illegal garage conversion. He was supposed to give me a 60 day notice and relocation fee according to all the laws I have read.

The lawyers tell me I have a case but they wont take my case :-?Kinda like you said i guess because of the illegal activity.

The rental agreement is VERBAL and the Landlord is trying to say i paid him for storage for 18 months and then he found out i was living here and told me to leave. Well I have witnesses and all kinds of mail that say i lived here the whole time and he knew it!

So do you think I will get the relocation fee? It is gonna be up to the judge I guess. His word against mine. The lawyers i talked to told me to go ahead and take it to court and see what the judge says.

I told the landlord on day one about the law and he answered with expletives. He is not interested in paying me any relocation fee. I even offered to settle out of court seeing that the relocation fee is a large amount. ($6,810) but he is not having it.

So what do you think?
