Illegal traffic stop????

As I pulled out of a local bar, I was pulled over for speeding. The officer said I was doing 52mph in a 45mph zone. He then stated that he had "paced" me at 52mph from the "thru lane". He had come to this conclusion in approx. 3 tenths of a mile. I need to know if there are any laws or regulations for "pacing" a vehicle. I do not feel 1500' is a fair distance to reach an accurate conclusion.
