A furnace installed in Mays Landing, NJ in 1990 by Sears was improperly installed and oversized accordng to an independent heatng contractor who is willing to put it in writing. Recenty I discovered that chimney soot and carbon monoxide had been pumping into my home for at least two heating seasons, possibly more. Sears service technicians who serviced the unit several times and who had cleaned my air ducts should have informed me of the problems. The furnace, a retrofit to an electric heat pump system was too large for the existing system.
The pipe from the furnce was run under the house in the crawl space for about 30' and up outside of the house. Since it was not pitched properly, condensation rusted it out and it fell on the ground under the house. My insulation is saturate with soot all the way to the second floor so I don't know how long this condition existed. My heat exchange was cleaned by Sears at the price of $390.00 in Oct of 99, but 2 huge cracks were discovered by the independent contractor when he dismntled the furnace two weeks ago.
