I had a Best buy card with my father under a joint account. He filed bankruptcy, I did not. On my credit report under this account it shows included in bankruptcy. It also reflects that this is an induvidual account not a joint. This caused me problems when purchasing my home including a prepayment penalty because of bad credit. It also has caused me to be denied for credit. I have disputed it with the credit companies to no avail. I have also contacted the account holder who will not remove it. I beleive this may constitue defamation of charactor but am not sure of the best route to take. Please help with any suggestions.

If you can show paper proof that it was a joint account, I believe that you should be able to write to the credit reporting agency, all 3 of the big ones and see if they can't remove this wrong information on this account.

Keep in mind that you will be held legally liable to pay the account to make it in good standing as you stated it is a joint account, which makes both of you liable for the debt. Since your father went BK on it, and it hasn't been paid, you are now liable for the debt. That is probably why the creditor won't remove you.

Once you pay the account, you should report it as paid to the credit reporting agencies as such and you will have your credit back.

Hope this helps.
