What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MICHIGAN
I received a bill for my vacant condo (turned on the power, but haven't moved in) and the first bill was $700! I called immediately, and they said they would fix it. They told me to wait for the next bill, which I did, but it was not changed. The following months were correct (3 months), which were around $40 (mostly taxes and fees). I refused to pay until they correct the initial bill. I called several times and e-mailed and they refuse to change it stating it was "actual usage." It is hard to believe because during that time, the condo only had ONE outlet. Yes, ONE outlet. The entire unit was stripped and no power was going anywhere. Furthermore, NOTHING was plugged in.
I received a letter stating they will shut-off the power. This worries me because I will move-in in about a month or so. Furthermore, I do not want it to negatively affect my credit.
Please let me know what I can do! I've contacted them several times, and nothing happened? Should I take them to small claims? Report it with the Michigan Public Utility Commission?
Thanks again!
