I am in a musical group. We perform all our own music, music that is written by members of the group. There has recently been talk of writing an agreement that grants statutory rate to the individual songwriters for their songs that we record and sell. Not all the members of the group write songs. My question is: is this standard practice or are the songs written for the group property of the group and proceeds should go to the group (an LLC). For instance, while the Beatles were together, did Paul McCartney and John Lennon receive more money because they wrote most of the songs or did the money go to the entity "The Beatles"?
