If I send in informal drawings with a utility application, can I send in formal drawings before a copy of the drawing objection sheet is sent to me?

Would that make things easier for the PTO; thus giving them a better impression of me?

Does sending informal drawings in the first place irritate them; thus slightly lessening the chance of a published patent? I know that shouldn't really matter, but does it in real life?

You can send in formal drawings whenever you want. However, by waiting for the examiner to request formal drawings at the end of the process, you avoid the hassle and expense of having to prepare multiple versions of formal drawings should the examiner direct you to correct something in the drawings, or if you need to correct, change, add, or delete a drawing based during prosecution.

So long as the informal drawings are legible (and assuming the formal drawings add nothing to the informal drawings), then it shouldn't matter to the PTO. The examiner will form no "impression" of you either way -- use of informal drawings is standard practice.

No.
