I am an US citizen, and my wife is a Colombian citizen. We have been married for 4 years, and my wife has had her residency for 1 year. We live in Iowa. We would like to adopt her nephew, who is 10 years old. Her brother has been awarded sole custody of the child (in Colombian courts) some time ago, due to abandonment by the child's mother and other issues. The child has lived at times with his father and his wife (not the child's mother) and other children, and at other times with his grandmother (my wife's mother).

My wife has lived in the US since 1989, except for a year around 1995. During that time, she has been helping out the child with expenses such as clothes and school books and other things. The child's father (my wife's brother) is supportive of us adopting him.

We are hopefull that we will not have any problems with the adoption from the Colombian government, but are not sure what hassles we may have with the US government (specifically, the INS).

We would appreciate any advice that anybody could give.
Thank you.
