This is probably dumb, but I learned years ago that the only dumb questions are the ones that don't get asked.

I keep getting emails from an adult novelty company. They're actually graphic ads with photos of their items. I've now unsubscribed from them 3 times in a single month. I have a fairly good idea of who is signing me up to recieve this crap.

I got irritated today and decided to sign into "my" account. I didn't know the password, so I went through their question section to try to set a new one. My address was correct, however my birthdate was not. I emailed the company to try to see what other information was in their storage, and recieved an email telling me to call the company's 1-800 number to speak with a supervisor.

I spoke with a supervisor, and asked for the IP address that my email had been signed up through. I was told that they cannot release the information unless I want to file charges against the person who signed me up. They gave me a fax number and told me to have my local police dept fax them on their letterhead.

As I said earlier, I have an idea of who is doing this. I don't know if it is this person or not, and I don't want to file a false report. Can I file a complaint without putting someone's name on it (other than my own)?

This wouldn't really bother me if I didn't have small children who often come into the room while I am checking email.

Thanks for reading through this, and for any advice.

Ask your local police department. Tell them that you don't know who it is, which is the truth. If you would rather not tell them who you suspect, you don't have to tell them that person's name, because you truly do not know whether it is that person or not.

I am here to tell you---nothing could be further from the truth!

Anyway, why not just block e-mails from that sender and put it behind you? So you are on a list. Almost everybody with an e-mail account is on a lot of them. If you don't know what to do, contact your ISP. They might do it at their level, but at least they would help you set up your e-mail client to do it.

There are also some really good programs out there that make this very easy.
