I am the Project Manager for residential construction company. I am also the only female Proj. Mgr. at my company, which is not unusal since construction is on the most part a male dominated field. My direct (on-site) boss does not have a background in this line of work (he used to sell cars), so you can imagine the frustration level by my second year of working with him.
The last few months have been exremely unbearable and as of recently intolerable. I think his ego has finally kicked in and he can no longer deal with a woman knowing more about this industry, ie. the 3 developments I run. My question is, can my boss blatently do things which unable me to do the job I was hired for? Can he "demote" me without verbally telling me with an intention to make me miserable and inevidably quit?
Example-Tell the subcontractors in the field NOT to talk to me (ie, consult on field/project issues), then use the excuse that the reason I was the ONLY one not to move into our new office was b/c I meet with the subs and the office needs to stay "clean"....and then turn around and take my office? So not only did I get "dis-invited or kicked-out", I can't even do my job.
Start (after 2 years) micro-manage me when he didn't before? There is n't one incident that could warrant this. I do and have always performed well above what has been required of me A project manager "manages" others, not the one who needs to be managed.
He has been taking certain responsibilities I have away, by saying no he'll handle it, or won't even tell me at all, I find out after the fact. He argues with everything I say, which he has the right to, but I only state fact, NOT opinion, he still will fight me tooth and nail. This endless cycle for the past two years has deteriated my patience and tolerance level, which inevidably has given him the upper hand. He now is able to say to his partner, and everyone else that my frustration and lack of patience is "emotional"... I know, b/c I was told so and taken aback at the statement. He also is saying I am also frazzled and aggitated, which intern makes me unconfrontable....The real truth is that it kills him that all consultants and subs would rather confer with me on issues than with him...and this is only b/c I have a backgound.
He tells his partner lies...like everyone else helps eachother out to get the job done and when I'm asked to help out, I say it's not my job. This is such a lie. I defended myself and told his partner that if that was the case, then why did I spend the past 2 days doing the title work for a project (which is our title companies job), OR how do you think the drainage re-design issue was resolved last week when your engineer was out of town, OR how do you think these projects got to where they are....if there are only two people in this company working on them, one being my boss, the other being me, and my boss used to sell cars? He got the point, but is not going to defend or side with me...I'm the employee not his partner.
Bottomline, my boss doesn't feel he should take a backseat to my knowledge and experience and I think has decided he doesn't need me anymore. Since this opinion may not be shared with his partner, he will not fire me, not does he want to pay unemployment. I have even tried to get fired, come into work at 10:00am, which is like lunchtime in the construction world. Not a word from him.
I know I threaten and intimidate him and he is fed up. It is to the point where even the subcontractors in the field feel bad for me. I am currently interviewing for a new job and should have one within the next few weeks.
Is there anything I can do? It is really hard for me to go to work everyday. This is really having a effect on me. I have worked to hard to be subjected to or stand for this demeening type of treatment.
