What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NJ

I had hired a home improvement contractor for finishing the basement.
He is registered contractor in NJ (found after I searched consumer affairs website) but the contract which I signed with him does not mention his License# which is required by law.

We are are having a dispute over the final bill since there were few changes (additions and deletions) to the project.
There are no signed change order forms for any of the changes.

The contractor is suing me Special Civil Court for the balance.

Is the original contract valid since by law he is required to put his license number?
Will the unsigned and disputed change orders forms hold in the court?
