**A: yes, since the student was to parcipate in a school related function such functions would be under the jurisdiction of the school (on or off campus) and therefore all school policies apply.
I can just see school athletes carying knives and guns.

My H is a hi-skool teacher. Kidz are freakier than ever these days. :( The last thing they need are weapons. <<shudder>>

My brother (18), in order to participate in high school athletics, was required to sign a code of ethics. This code states the signee would be found in violation for breaking the following provision:
"Absolutely no use or possession of the following items on or OFF CAMPUS.....5) Weapons"

The California Ed. Code guarantees students: "You have the right to be provided with an equitable opportunity to participate in all academic extracurricular activities, including athletics.

However; to obtain this right, the signee is, in effect, coerced into surrendering their second amendment rights. Is there a rights violation in here? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

I think the key is the "right to be provided with an equitable opportunity to participate", and not the "right to participate".

You are given the opportunity to participate, but only under certain conditions.

I suspect asserting your first amendment rights to call the coach a (insert nasty word of choice here) would also eliminate your opportunity to participate.

**A: there are other weapons of today such as IPods, MP3's, cellphones and the likes, whereby these kids spend all their time texting, listing to music, playing video games, linking to MySpace and not doing their homework.

Certain rights are relinquished when participating in athletics. The US SC
has already ruled that those who wish to be team players must submit to drug testing at random, meaning NO individualized suspicion, and it does NOT violate the 4th AM, so it is logical to assume such may Constitutionally apply for weapons, even if CA has a right to bear arms provision in thier constitution, as most states do.
