I'm in Tennesse and my husband has custody of his 17 yr old son. The son has been running away, involved in stealing, and is currently in a state lock-up facility. The son owes $3000 in restitution for damage to a stolen car. My husband must appear in Juvenile court concerning payment for the restitution. I have heard that a parent can only be held liable for a certain amount of money, like $600 or something around that amount and then, the person claiming damages must PROVE that the rest of the damage claimed was caused by the child and sue the parent for it. Is there a law concerning the maximum that a parent can be held responsible for paying, due to a claim of damage caused by their child?
