My best friend and her fiance got married in TN recently. They obtained a valid marriage license, and had a ceremony by a certified oficient. However, due to personal beliefs, they did not have their license filed with the state.

My question is, are they is this a legal and valid marriage? She's now questioning whether or not she can legally change her name and marital status for taxes, SSN, etc...

There are indeed married if the person performing the ceremony filed any papers with the county/state. They do not have to send in their copy to be married.

The officient did not file the license with the county after the ceremony. Is it still legal?
