I live in South Carolina and work for one of the county goverments as an ems dispatcher. I have been here for a year and have just been really made aware of how the holiday pay works. Well, here is how it goes.

EMS never closes. We work alternating shifts, two day shifts, two night shifts, and we work holidays if it falls on our work schedule. Well, everyone, whether you work the holiday or not, gets the same pay. You get paid 84 hours on your paycheck for time worked plus the 12 hours of holiday pay paid at your regular hourly rate. Well, the person who did not work the holiday gets 84 hours of pay for the time they worked plus the 12 hours of holiday pay paid at their regular hourly rate. And no, the holiday hours don't count towards overtime. So, everyone gets the same pay whether they work the holiday or not.
Being that it is a goverment agency I do not see how this is true compensation for those who have to work it. We should atleast get some incentive. Also, when you work nights you do not get a shift defientrial. Didn't know the law on that.
Well, I am really peeved right now that county employees, w/regular hours, are getting this time off, which is the law. But we have to work and don't get anything extra for working it. See, they don't give us any extra pay because they have to either give us the day off on another day whether we work or not, with pay because regular people are not getting docked pay for being off and hourly people with regular hours are getting paid the days off.

So, what is legal? What can I do to see that I am truely compensated???

Thanks!
