What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? North Carolina
My children have to go to court over school absences. My son is a Type I diabetic and misses alot of school because they have no nurse and if his blood sugar is high or low it is not safe to send him. My daughter missed alot due to vomiting which we have just recently discovered was due to an anxiety problem. The school board says that it is because of not receiving notes for these absences, but my wife has mental disabilities that makes it hard for her to remember to always write excuses. I am a full-time student so I have little time to be keeping up with excuse notes. The school board is threatening to fine us, put us in jail, or take our kids away. They also said that we are not entitled to an attorney. It feels like we are being bullied.

This seems to me like a lot of excuses and not enough excuse note:cool:

You've GOT to be kidding me. If you're too busy to raise your children, please give them to someone who has time for them and all that comes with the responsibility of being a parent.

it's not discrimination.

you need to be a parent. if school is taking away time from your children's state required education, then maybe you need to manage your time better, or quit school.

is mom treating her mental disabilities? if children are so sick they are missing school, then maybe they need more medical attention then you are giving them?

if you are medically neglecting them, then maybe CPS does need to step in.

I'm sorry I believed this to be a place where I could ask for advice but this just seems to be a place where people get thier rocks off by dishing about other people's problems. I'm sorry I wasted your time.

You might want to listen

Here is the deal, people are telling you this because your kids absences do seem excessive. The school is responsible for making sure your children get the education they need. To be frank, their basic attendance requirements are not that high. Yes, the school can do that. Sounds like you guys have a lot on your plate. If you wife is struggling right now, (there is no shame in mental disability) you are the alternative caregiver to your children. You may need to back off school so that you can be there for your kids and for her. unfortunately with kids they can be hard to deal with and very needy. I have two and am trying to balance working full-time and going back to school - so I can understand. Just make sure you are organized for the meeting and know the absences backwards and forwards, otherwise it will appear like you don't care. Good luck to you

A Judge will much more harsh than anyone on this forum could be. You and your wife are educationally neglecting your children. If your son and daughter can not attend school due to illness then YOU should be sending Doctor's note in to the school.

You received a warning from the school BEFORE this current action and did nothing. YOU have left the sick children in the care of a woman that is too incompetent to write a note for the children. The children should be placed with others until you pull your act together.
