What is the name of your state? indiana not sure if posting this in right area. the county i live in adopted a wheel tax of 25.00 per vehicle. the local license branch was supposed to start collecting the tax when people renewed their license plates effective 1-1-07. in march of 07 the local government realized the tax was not being collected. the city county council took a vote and decided to start collecting the tax right away. the license branch said the soonest they could start collecting is june 1 2007. so if you have to renew your plates after june 1 then you have to pay the 25.00 per vehicle tax. but if you renewed your plates before june 1 then you dont have to pay it. does this sound legal???

Why wouldn't it be legal? Because of their own screwups, the county is giving a tax amnesty to those who register their cars before they and the DMV get their act together.

Would you prefer that the county send bills to people who have already registered their cars? It would cost the county far more than $25 to prepare, mail, and collect on the new bills.

yes i would why is it fair some have to pay the tax and not others thats not right

Even if your plates expire after June 1st, you don't have to wait until then to get your new plates. Just go to the local license branch, and tell them you want to renew now. I always get my aunt's plates when I get mine, and her's don't expire until September, and I renew in March.
