What is the name of your state? Maryland

Hi, My name is Chris and i was wondering if anyone could help me out. I just started a new job approx 2 months ago when i moved to MD from NJ. In NJ i filed single 1 and my approx tax per paycheck was about 15% or so. Now at this job in MD my tax rate per week varies GREATLY, from 23% to 27.8% of my total weekly pay. For instance, 555.50 Gross, F.I.C.A - 34.45, Medicare, 8.05, Fed withhold - 69.00, State withhold - 43.40. If anyone know's if these figures are correct please let me know. I have a bad feeling they are wrong and i dont think your tax rate should vary on a weekly basis unless you make a drastic difference in pay per week. Please reply with any knowledge you may have on the subject. I really would like to fix this if its incorrect.

States can set there own withholding regulations and it is very common for two states to have a great difference in withholding. In addition, Maryland has a local tax that "piggybacks" on state withholding. The rate is based on the county in which you reside, unless you live in Baltimore city, in which case the city rate applies. Here is some information on Maryland withholding taxes:

You can also go to http://www.paycheckcity.com and pro forma your paycheck.
