About 11 years ago my American friend left a bad marriage in Italy and came back to his hometown in Nebraska. Before leaving Italy he signed over all property to his wife, including custody of their then 8 year old daughter. She never allowed him any contact with the child. He has been living with a wonderful woman for 10 years here in the US, and he would marry her, but there is this other marriage hanging in the balance, in Italy. He once received notice that he was charged with desertion in Italy, and he is afraid to go back to straighten it out.
What options does he have? Is he in danger of arrest in Europe, and can he obtain a divorce here in the US from his Italian wife?
