What is the name of your state? nj

I doubt I have a case, but I'll ask anyway. I accepted a job offer. I was not told the offer was contingent on anything, such as a credit report or reference check. Actually, my references were checked, at least some of them, prior to the offer as I was told of the nice things that were said. I left 2 weeks notice with my present employer based on the offer. Two days before I was supposed to start, the owner of the new job called and rescinded the offer and refused to explain why. Meanwhile, I have a problem because I left notice and, even if my employer lets me stay on (yet to be determined), things will never be the same. There is no written contract. Do I have any recourse?

thanks,
