What is the name of your state? CO

What is the normal procedure for obtaining a judgment on someone?
I would think the opposing party would take you to court first, so you have a chance to defend yourself.....is it normal to get a signed judgment in the mail with no prior notice?

Thank you

From the many post in these forums from folks that things like that happen, yes. The first thing you need to do is go to the court house where the judgment was granted and check for the "proof of service". This will be the official record of notification that you were served. If the below was not followed, you may have cause for an appeal.

From Colorado Court Rule #4.
(e) Personal Service. Personal service shall be as follows:

(1) Upon a natural person whose age is eighteen years or older by delivering a copy thereof to the person, or by leaving a copy thereof at the person's usual place of abode, with any person whose age is eighteen years or older and who is a member of the person's family, or at the person's usual workplace, with the person's secretary, administrative assistant, bookkeeper, or managing agent; or by delivering a copy to a person authorized by appointment or by law to receive service of process.
