ny/maine
long story short...lived in and divorced in ny, both me and my ex moved to maine.. child is now 18 and ex no longer will pay support because in maine the age of completion of support is 18. our divorce decree states support is til 21. maine child support enforcement says that they can not help me that they do not have jurisdiction. she has always paid me directly although we have a child support order. does anyone have any advice as to what i can do to get the rest of the support?

I thought you was in FL. ?

I might be wrong here , but it's worth a shot .

Maine is stating they don't have Jurisdiction .

If you or both of you have lived in Maine long enough to establish residency , you could request a certified copy of the orders ( including Child support ) from NY .

You would then take those certified orders to the Court in your local district , and file them as a " registration of foreign Custody/Visitation/Child support orders " .

Maine might then be able to take Jurisdiction over child support , giving full faith to the NY orders , as neither Party lives in the originating State .

It's worth a shot .

You might have to write the Court/Judge in NY a request to change Jurisdictions .

If I'm out of line , someone more knowlegable may reply .

It doesn't matter what the age is in Maine, you have an existing court order, you just need to have it domesticated in the state you are both in now like Blonde Lebinese said if you qualify as a resident there. If Maine accepts jurisdiction, then you can pursue enforcement of the CO there.

except that when i went to them in maine and explained what i needed they said at support enforcement that i could have it moved to here but then i would have to abide by the maine laws which say 18 is the cutoff. they closed my case
does getting a lawyer in ny help me at all?
does anyone out there know of any similar situations>
