I'm working on my first assignment on Westlaw. But having trouble understanding the difference between the H and C status flags on KeyCite.

According to Westlaw:

H In cases and administrative decisions, a blue H indicates that the case or administrative decision has some history.

C In cases and administrative decisions, a green C indicates that the case or administrative decision has citing references but no direct history or negative citing references. In statutes and regulations, a green C indicates that the statute or regulation has citing references.

I am not understanding the difference between these. Can someone clarify for me? Thanks! What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

We're learning how to use Westlaw in my legal research class, specifically KeyCite at this time. For the assignment, I have to KeyCite a few cases, list what flags the case has, and what they mean. I don't understand the difference between H and C based on West's definitions of the two flags..

**A: sorry, we don't do homework. Look, Zigner is waving a white flag

Since this is useful to know for anyone using Westlaw:

H gives a case's procedural history, both forward and backward in time. For example, if you are looking at an Illinois Supreme Court decision, H will show the Illinois Court of Appeals decision below. C shows the citing references, i.e., which cases have cited the case you are looking at. Sometimes, H and C will overlap and include the same cases. For example, say you are looking at an Illinois Court of Appeals decision that was accepted by the Illinois Supreme Court. H will show the Supreme Court decision and, if the Supreme Court decision cites the lower decision, C will also show the Supreme Court decision.

Thank you for the reply. That's essentially what my professor said in her email today. Although your response was even better =)
