I live in new jersey I recently had issues with my former landlord.since October I have complained to him about the repairs that needed to be fixed in my apt which included the light switch in my bedroom which sparks would come out of and shock you if touched,bathroom floor,shower,sink,and toilet needed to be fixed,balcony door was too small for frame so cold air would come and several other repairs.In Dec I withheld the rent and sent him a letter and called left several messages which he did not respond to until January and he made a verbal agreement that if I sent him the 2 months rents he would send someone to fix the stuff and if he didn't that I could withhold the following months rent until he made all repairs which I agreed.SO I sent him his money and the the whole month of Feb. he ignored my calls never returned any messages and we received a notice in the mail to go to court for back rent of Dec, & Jan which he was paid and he cashed.The court date was for March 2.He finally got in touch with me at the end of Feb and started making repairs but still hadn't finished.I asked him if I should go to court the next day he responded that he will have his lawyer take care of it not to worry about it.Sine he had started making repairs I figured I would send him Feb rent and pay him march when he finished.About a week after the march 2nd court date which I assumed was cancelled the sheriff comes and pad locked us out no notice nothing.So I went up to court and and they spoke with my landlord and he told them he already sent back my money order back.when we went to court I had had the Feb money order and I had march rent with me the landlord refused it and said he wanted me out.The judge sided with him and granted him the removal.now he is suing me for back rent is he allowed to do so?
