What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Dallas, tx. I have a friend who is considering a CD release. His band has great potential, they are not like the crappy highschool garage band that most likely will go no where. What precautions would he need to take for others not to claim his lyrics as there own.

His songs were protected by copyright the moment they were set down in tangible form (recorded, written out on paper, whatever). Registration with the copyright office offers him additional protection (see the faqs at copyright.gov). Note nothing PREVENTS someone from disputing ownership.
