I was fired from my job. I was in the middle of buying an apartment and I am now going to have to cancel the contract. I am in danger of losing my down payment. If I do lost my down payment, can I sue my employer? My HR dept and my employer gave me a written recommendation for my board a month ago stating I was employed and a good worker, etc.

No, you cannot sue your employer if you lose your downpayment.

Why were you fired?

Then I'm sorry, but while I agree the timing is unfortunate, it appears your employer is entirely legal.

Without some evidence that your employer knew a month ago that your employment was in jeopardy AND that they deliberately withheld that information when they completed the employment verification, you're pretty much out of luck. You'd need more than the fact that they said you were a good worker on the form. That's what the circumstances were THEN. If something happened, or several somethings happened, over the course of the month to lead them to believe that your employment with them was not going to work, the fact that they had said previously that you were a good worker does not require them to retain you.
