What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia
I work as a dish installer for a company with a company van. The company is responsible for maintaining and fixing the van. Recently the van was out of commission due to a transmission problem. I was out of work for 9 days, my question is can I do anything legally to make the company recoup my lost wages. On a side note I was able to work during the 9 days I could have rode with someone or drove my car to pick up another van from them.

In the absence of a legally binding and enforceable contract that states you get paid when the van is out of commission, if you didn't work you don't get paid. There is no action you can take to force the company to pay you for work you did not do, particularly when you acknowledge that you had other options which would have allowed you to work.

Looks like the last part of the message I put was cut short. I was able to work either riding with someone or getting another van, but management won't let me ride with another tech and they said that there wasn't another van for me to use.

Doesn't change the answer. The employer still has no obligation under the law to pay you for work you didn't do.
