Hello,
I have recently opened a "for fun" online casino. When I say "for fun" this does not mean that the credits used for play are completely worthless to the players.
I will try to explain this the best I can.
There are online computer role playing games called MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) or MMO for short.
In these games, players can create a character, in which they will immerse themselves into a vast fantasy online world. In this fantasy world, they can fight monsters, trade items and in-game currency with other players, etc...
The in-game currency (I will use gold as an example) can be earned by slaying monsters, selling items to other players or merchants in the game, finding it, etc...
Now this gold has real value to the players who play these games. With this gold, they can purchase new weapons, items, spells, etc... for their character within the game.
This is where the casino comes into play.
I have created an actual online casino that is 100% based on that "in-game" currency.
The players log into the MMO, transfer their gold to my character in the game, and I in turn credit their casino account with the appropriate amount of casino credits. When they are ready to cash out, I simply transfer the appropriate amount of gold back to their character in the game.
I am not concerned about the legalities of that alone. The in-game money never leaves the game world, and the casino is a "gold for gold" based operation. There is NEVER any real money invloved in the gambling, nor will there ever be, and I do not have any affiliation with any real casinos.
I am going to add a feature that will allow the casino players to upgrade the value of their casino credits.
For example,
Low Roller: 100 gold = 1 casino credit
Mid Roller: 1,000 gold = 1 casino credit
High Roller 10,000 gold = 1 casino credit
etc...
Now here comes my legal question:
I would like to charge a small monthly fee to the players to upgrade their account status to High Roller and above. The fee would be based on USD, however, this fee would only cover the account "status" and would never be used in conjunction with the gambling its self. As I said, this is not a "real money" casino, and never will be.
Would there be any legal issues if I were to charge real money for the account status upgrades on my "pretend" casino site?
I am being very cautious about the relationship between the gambling, and any money I make off of my site.
Thank you for any advice that you can offer.
