What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Massachusetts

Hi thank you for taking a look at this. I am a hairdresser in Massachusetts. I have just been told by my supervisor that the whole salon has a mandatory meeting in April which is no big deal, but then she hands me a packet of what we are going to be going over at the meeting. In the packet are different sheets of paper laying out financial information that she expects us to fill out. The information are questions like: Who much money do you bring in a month, Are you married, How much money does your spouse make, How much do you pay for mortgage, utilities, food, etc. Along with the pages of financial information it also has a page on what you do not need to be spending money on but do. Is it legal to make this type of training mandatory? And if is it is are they able to ask these types of questions?

yes, your employer can ask the questions and make the training mandatory. and fire you if you refuse to comply.

She's probably trying to help her employees have better financial health and probably won't ever see your answers. You are being paid for attending this training right?

Have you asked your supervisor what type of training will be taking place in April, why this financial information is necessary and who will have access to this? (Those would be my first questions.)

I can only guess that the salon has engaged someone to do some budgeting/financial planning work with everyone (which would be very nice) but I'd want to know specifics before I provide all that personal financial information. I'd also want to know what the trainer's credentials are before giving him/her access to that info. (Hopefully it's a certified financial planner and not just the salon owner's neighbor, Bob, who is handy with his checkbook.)

Just ask these questions in a pleasant, conversational way and don't be confrontational. It appears the salon may be doing something very beneficial for their employees.
