Pennsylvania. Writing on behalf of my brother. Here are the facts...
My brother owns a house currently being rented by someone. My brother's wife owns a house which they are currently living in. Mortgages are being paid on both houses.
My brother has done alot of work on his wife's house. Added a two car garage with a lift, finished the basement and lots of odds and ends.

My brother is the type of guy that gives away the farm as he is too trusting.

My mom is concerned for my brother because of the fact that he is doing all of this work and I can safely assume that her mortage was refinanced with equity taken out to pay for this and ultimately, he is paying a huge portion of the mortgage since she hardly makes any $....

When my mom confronted him, he said that Pennsylvania is a 50/50 state and that if/when they divorce, he will get 1/2 of the value of her house. Is this true? I am very concerned for him.

He will be entitled to half the equity acquired DURING THE MARRIAGE and none of what she had beforehand. She is entitled to the same of his house.

Since I am not fully aware of all of the details about whether they refinanced her house or wherever the money came from to pay for all of this, what happens if they split and there is this refinanced mortgage that is way more than what she had beforehand, is my brother liable for this.

What if the house does not appreciate in value, does he loose everything?
