What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NJ

I was in municipal Court this morning to answer for two different tickets, one of which was NJSA 39:4-215, failure to obey signs. From everything I've found it looks like the maximum fine would be $100 but the judge fined me 200+ and 33 court fees. I get the court fees but was he within his boundaries to fine me more than what it appears the minimum is? I tried to address it in court but was shut down and told to apply for a payment plan for the fines, which I did. It just doesn't seem like he was within his boundaries. If he's not, what kind of recourse do I have? He was obviously very unwilling to entertain my question, even simply for explanation.

Everything I found online points to a fine of $54 - I haven't seen a maximum or minimum listed in my (very) brief search, just the $54.

You can call the court clerk's office and inquire there as to where the judge's numbers came from. That's what I would do.

The other alternative is to sit down and speak to a traffic attorney, but that might cost you.

See: http://www.njd.uscourts.gov/sites/njd/files/APPE.pdf

Although that PDF seems to indicate minimum fines.
