What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? RI

Hello, my father in law recently died in a hospital. He was destitute and my wife really did not have a relationship with him. He had a medicaid case in process that had been denied but had solid grounds for appeal.

The hospital has contacted my wife about initiating this appeal with medicaid so that the hospital may get paid. They said they will write the letter and everything, all she has to do is sign it.

My wife does not really want to get involved in this, and certainly does not want to end up being on the hook for anything. On the other hand, if the hospital can get paid by medicaid, and we can help, why shouldn't we?

Should we touch this with a 10 foot pole?

I don't see why she would need to get involved unless paperwork is needed that she can obtain. If she signs anything she should read it very carefully to make sure she is not accepting any responsibility for his bills.

but if she is the executor of his estate and the only next of kin.....there is a reason the hospital contacted her. how else did they know of your relationship and your address and phone number

I just do not understand why they would need you to do an appeal to medicaid? That would be just like them trying to get you to pay the bill
