MEmily1105 asked about the laws that govern cameras in the dressing rooms of retail establishments.
What is perhaps interesting is that the majority of states do not have laws prohibiting the use of cameras in dressing rooms (Michigan is one of the few that has such a law).
There is the federal Video Voyeurism Prevention Act and there are state privacy laws that prohibit the filming or photographing of people without their knowledge or consent in areas where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy. These areas generally include bathrooms, bedrooms, locker rooms and dressing rooms.
However, these laws do not necessarily prevent cameras in retail store dressing rooms when signs are clearly posted stating the dressing rooms are being monitored. Courts have upheld the right of stores to monitor dressing rooms by loss prevention personnel through the use of cameras in these areas.
