I have a family member who has recently been diagnosed schizophrenic. He is 18 years old and has been in and out of mental health clinics for a year. The insurance has run out and it seems the only way he can get help from the state is if he commits a crime. Unfortunately this happened he was charged with breaking and entering. However despite desperate attempts to inform the public defender of his diagnosis, and that the family would rather see him sent to a state hospital where he can recieve proper treatment, the lawyer had the charges dropped. He is now at home without proper medical attention and increasingly more violent and unstable. Would guradianship be an alternative to this case. If his mother and father were appointed guardians would all of his medical and criminal business have to be presented to them so that they could have final say on what happens. Any advice or links to advice would be more than greatly appreciated. Thank You.
