What is the name of your state? Kansas

Our temporary order states that my STBX is to pay child support and alimony monthly, with payments due on the 1st and 15th of each month. He has yet to pay a dime, and my attorney said that she would file a motion to compel this week. What is a motion to compel and what purpose does it serve?

Compel - meaning "to force" (Black's Law). In other words, the purpose of the motion is to force him to pay or face the consequences (whatever those may be).

They are just going to tell him that he needs to pay? It sounds like a waste of time to me.
Does he have to actually appear in court for this or is this dealt with through the attorneys?

I do believe he will need to attend.

This is a long process. You will find out the hard way I imagine. Sedgwick County courts took over two yrs to get my ex to pay.
