Ok, I just was in a five car collision on a major interstate in my city. I was the front car...and near as I can tell, the main damage to my vehicle is cosmetic and I did not hit anyone. The car at fault appears to be the last car according to witness statements and the opinions of the cops on the scene. My quesiton is: Since this is a wreck that I was not at fault for...is there a way to make sure I do not have to pay the deductible to get my car fixed? The cop suggested the insurance co. might, but I am not sure. And advice is welcome....I have not had a wreck in eight years and I am flying blind.

File a claim with the at-fault driver's insurance. Be aware that there may be a limits issue, and if so they will need to wait until receiving ALL claims before paying out ANY. So it may be best to use your collision coverage, and let your insurance company pursue repayment (including your deductible) from the at-fault driver.

OK....well, I already filed a claim with my insurance company as soon as I pulled away. So, is it best to just trust them to do right by me? You hear such horror stories about insurance companies...

I just discovered that the driver at fault for this accident was not insured at the time. Even though the police on the scene verifed her insurance converage....what should I do?????

The police verified that she had an insurance CARD, not that the coverage was active!

Now, you file your collision claim and pay your deductible. Your insurance company will probably attempt to collect from the at fault party just as they would if she was insured, but there is now less of a chance they will be successful. People who can't afford to pay their insurance premiums usually don't have much in the way of collectible assets. But you never know :)

i would trust my own insurance company when im not at fault than the other persons. i would file under collision, pay deductible, get car fixed asap, and hope to get your deductible back eventually.
