Hi! I am the host of an independent Variety Show in Canada.

I use a lot of popular music on my Show. It would be great if someone could direct me in the legalities with this (if there is any).

I have a few questions:
- Are we legally allowed to play popular music on our Show?
- Can we make Videos with popular music on them and show them to our audience?
- Can we edit over popular music and make our own concoctions/remixes?

Some information that might be helpful about my Show:
- It’s free
- It’s in a bar
- Around 40 people are in the audience weekly
- I am not selling our Show
- I am not distributing copies of the Show
- I do the Show for free, I do not get paid
- I put short clips of our Show on the internet

Thanks for reading!
Jenny

From the top of the board: U.S. Law Only.

But most likely, you will need a license for a public performance of a copyrighted work. Contact a Canadian lawyer to find out for sure.
