OP apparently loaned car to SIL not D why not.just sue SIL for the costs.

Abandoning the car for days suggests there is more to this saga ?

Are you asking whether you can sue him, or whether you can successfully sue him?

The answer to the first is yes, you can sue him. The answer to the second is, sorry, the crystal ball is out for repairs.

Totalling the car is one thing. Not telling OP and just abandoning it - yeah, they're not invited to Thanksgiving dinner, because the $700 impound fee was avoidable.
