But to answer your question, scalping a lawn means cutting grass on the lowest mower setting. This can either promote the growth of grass or kill the grass, depending on the height of the grass, the season and the type of grass.

In my area of New York state, I would find it problematic to do that right now, due to the danger to the wild turtles.
