My boyfriend and I were having problems with our roommate. We asked her to leave and she agreed to do so by the end of the month. Only a day later she left a letter on the counter saying that unless she had legal documents in hand that said she was already off the lease and wouldn’t owe anything then she was not moving out. My boyfriend and I weren’t going to put up with her anymore, so we decided to move out ourselves since the landlord said if we moved out, she would have to force our roommate to leave since she didn’t qualify to stay alone. There are two days left in the month and our roommate hasn’t started to pack. We are completely out of the apartment. We cleaned our part and took photos. The landlord said we would have to pay until a new tenants move in. We already understood that. She said that if our roommate does not pay any more money the landlord would be forced to get the rest from us. If our roommate is still there in the new month can the landlord still force us to pay her half? If we end up paying the whole amount until the new tenants move in, can we sue our roommate for that money?

Your landlord is correct and if you did not get a release in writing you don't really have anything you can prove that seems winable if you were to be sued.
