What is the name of your state? OH

I'm posting this here, just in case there are others who have been there, done that and could help ;)

X and I have been divorced for 10 years. We share 50/50 custody. Neither pays child support to the other as the children alternate weeks between houses.

My husband and I bought 16 yr old a car (nothing expensive). Partially, to make things easier for her (X grumbles about driving her to activities, so she stopped signing up for things). Currently, she holds a temp permit. She will be getting the 'real thing' next week.

Questions: Who is responsible for paying the auto insurance, if she's not paying it herself (which she will, once she starts working this summer)?

Currently, she is covered by our insurance when she drives our cars, and X's when she drives his. But things change when she gets the real license. Then she is considered a youthful driver, and it goes up quite a bit.

Do we each have to insure her as a youthful driver at each home? Split the cost?(which means I will have to pay for it all, X will never contribute).

We are giving her the car, but it's still registered under my husband's name. Should we put it in her name? Could we still be sued if she were in an accident?

If we do end up paying for her insurance, is she still covered if she drives any of the cars at her father's house?

Thanks!

With our insurance, we would have to insure my stepdaughter on our policy on our cars, and she would NOT be covered on her mom's car. Her mom would need to insure her (my sd) on her (the mom's) policy in order to be covered on her (the mom's) car. Now if sd got her own car, we'd either add the car on our policy and list her as the main driver. If the car is in her name, she may need her own policy, which would drive the cost way up.

In a nutshell, call your insurance company and present the situation to them and see what they say.

If I was you, and I will be pretty soon...... My fience's son is 16 now.

We are NOT insuring him, and neither is his monther for that matter.

We all know how teens are - especially boys - - and none of us are willing to jack our premiums up to insure him.
Driving is a privilege, not a right. Kids need to know that. If they are responsible for paying the insurance, chances are very good that they won't act like idiots when they get behind the wheel, because they should be aware that stupidity is going to cost them in the long run.

You're not required to cover her as a driver, however she needs to realize the coverage must come from somewhere. No one covered me when I got my license.. It was up to me to pay my own way.
