I'm in New York. How long does it typically take to get the deed for a house purchase? We bought out house in February 05 so it's almost one year from the closing and we still don't have our deed. When we made our purchase there was a land subdivision involved in which the owner's father owned the surrounding 4 acres of land. The owner was given the house by her father and was paying tax on only .25 land, while her dad was paying the other .25 attached to his 4 acres. I think this was done merely for tax purposes so that the daughter wouldn't have to pay the taxes. At closing, we were given the temporary deed documents that specifically state that we own .50 acre and we were required to pay an extra $350.00 of tax for that land. We paid the seller. Recently, we checked with the town hall and they don't have any record of this change of land ownership. They still have us down as owning .25 and that's what our mortgage co. paid the taxes on. We have been through real estate law nightmares in the past and I think my husband is being overly nervous about all of this, thinking somehow they have swindled us out of the land. Isn't it quite possible that since we don't have the final deed document, that's why it hasn't been recorded? Isn't this our job to have the deed recorded or was our attorney supposed to have taken care of all of this months ago? I think I remember something about it taking a long time to get the deed. Don't advise me to contact this attorney....we fired him. Thanks for your responses.
