If I buy a car in NYS for approx. $75,000, pay the sales tax and register it and sell it via a private sale, a few months later, is there a way to recover the sales tax?
I would buy a new vehicle with the money I received from selling the car.
I understand if i trade it in on a new car at a dealership, i receive a credit for sales tax on the value of the trade in.

thx

Sure. Sell it for $5000 or $6000 more than the $75,000 you paid for it. That'll cover your sales tax. Oh, wait, your buyer will also have to pay sales tax on his purchase and your new car will likely have depreciated below the purchase price so good luck getting that kind of deal.

That's different.

No, the state will not refund the sales tax you paid in that circumstance.
