What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Florida

I've lived in my condo for 3 years. Got a dog a little over 2.5 years ago. It wasn't planned but we ended falling in love with it and can't see our lives with out it.

They don't allow dogs because owners don't clean up after them.

They allow cats.

My dog is just like a cat. About 8 pounds. Uses a puppy litter. Rarely barks. The only time she goes outside is when we're going to walk her across the street or take her to the dog park.

A lot of people have dogs, its well known. There's 1 guy with a big loud dog and I'm pretty sure he ruined it for everyone.

They just sent us a warning letter stating that fines will be sent out shortly.

Can they fine us at a daily basis?

Is there a limit to how much they can fine us?

My dog is just like a cat except that its now... can I fight it? Should I fight it?

My wife hasn't been diagnosed with anything but after 10 years together I know she has a problem with depression and anxiety. Losing the dog would honestly affect her health. Can a letter from a doctor help?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

**A: read your condo docs; all of them. The answers should be there as far as the fine policy etc.

If you love your dog, move out. Perhaps you can rent out your unit? There are likely lots of condos available in FL that DO allow dogs.

I, too, am a dog lover, but if one chooses to own in a place controlled by a HOA, one cannot just take on a pet that is prohited by the existing rules. Just ASSUMING it would be all right was unfair to the dog, and other owners there. You agreed to comply with the rules by choosing to buy there.

I'm sorry, but I'm having a problem with your contention that a dog is just like a cat....

If we're talking about size & shape, then (by your definition), the following should be allowed too, right?

Dogs are not allowed. Obviously, you violated the rules by getting one. And yes, you could have resisted knowing having a dog was a violation of the rules. No, the dog is not a cat. That's as silly as saying, "My dog thinks he's a person." No, your dog doesn't think he's a person. You think he should be treated like one.

You think your wife is suffering from anxiety and depression, not because she has been diagnosed with same, but because it's a convenient excuse to keep the dog. If you really believed what you posted, you would have gotten your wife help ten years ago.

I've talked with a woman who raised service dogs. She says it drives her crazy when people stick labels on dogs that haven't been specially raised and trained to actually be awarded the term "service."

A columnist is so ticked off by people claiming animals are service animals that he has written that now squirrels are getting the label service squirrels.

Is this just a generic letter to everybody reminding them "no dogs" or were you singled out? Has anybody complained or had a problem specifically with your dog?

Many places that "don't allow dogs" often make exceptions for extremely small ones, especially if nobody is complaining about it. Maybe you should talk to them about it and explain how small and quiet your dog is and they might make an exception. Maybe you can offer to pay a small "cleanup" fee even if the poop didn't come from your dog.

Draft a proposed change to the bylaws to allow dogs under 20 pounds. Bring it up at the next meeting for a vote. Check your bylaws to see if it needs 2/3 majority or just plain majority.

My wife kicked me out years ago. She claimed I was a dog. :D
