What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I was part of a Sports & Social group that hosted "pick up" sport events. I am no longer with the company as of November 2010. I signed a non-compete agreement in June of 2010.

I would like to "organizer" other "get togethers" that involve some of the sports my previous company is currently promoting. I don't want to start another "group" but my ex-business partner thinks I am starting a new group. I will not be using any of the "secrets" or "tools" that the company is using right now I just want to be able organize events without the possibility of being sued from my former business partner.

So my question: Is my non-compete agreement legal?

Thanks I look forward to your response.

Sounds like a problem and I think your old partner has the right concerns. Are you going to be competing for same customers? Sounds like the service do involve sports therefore they could overlap even if there are different approaches. Most of these issues can be resolved if you explain to your old partner your business objectives. Was it a bad breakup?
